The Essentials of the Bible: Part 3 -- Dysfunction in the Garden – The Fall of Man A Generational Curse

Could Holy, Righteous, Perfect Godly character be developed without rebellion, sin, repentance; forgiveness, reconciliation and restoration?  We took a glimpse at the reason for the creation of man.  But the world created for man, is a wondrous view into the mind of God.  Looking into creation, we can see the Creator.  King David observed creation and declared it’s revelation of the Creator; communication without words; wondrous communion between God and man.

Psalms 19:1-3 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.  (2)  Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.  (3)  There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Genesis Chapter 1 is the creation account of the material universe and all plant and animal life, culminating with the creation of man.

Day 1      God Created the Heavens and the earth and moved upon the waters; spoke light into His creation; separated the light into day and night.

Day 2      God created the firmament (vault or arch of the sky) and separated the waters and called the firmament heaven.

Day 3      God gathered the waters under heaven in one place to let dry land appear and called the dry land earth and the gathered waters; seas.  God continued to speak into existence all plant life; herbs, grass and trees.

Day 4      God then created two lights; the greater to rule the day and the lesser to rule the night.  These were for signs, seasons, days and years.  Thus the first 24 hour day was created along with seasons and years.  Up to this point each of the three preceding days had evening and morning as a demarcation of the specific events.  Until the sun and moon were set in orbits, there was not any means to set time.  They were periods of creation marked by their events, not necessarily 24 hours.  The word “day” is used three ways in the Bible, as Dr. C.I. Scofield states:

The word "day" is used in Scripture in three ways:

(1) that part of the solar day of twenty-four hours which is light Genesis 1:5 Genesis 1:14;  John 9:4 ; 11:9 .

(2) such a day, set apart for some distinctive purpose, as, "day of atonement" ( Leviticus 23:27 ); "day of judgment" Matthew 10:15 .

(3) a period of time, long or short, during which certain revealed purposes of God are to be accomplished, as "day of the Lord."

Day 5      God created all aquatic life to reproduce in the seas and winged birds of the air to multiply on the earth.

Day 6      God created every beast of the field and every creeping thing.  Then He created man in His own image.

Day 7      God rested; blessed and sanctified the day making it the weekly day of rest called the Sabbath.

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

God formed man out of the dust of the ground in the wilderness and then placed him in the Garden of Eden.  He then caused the man to go into a deep sleep and He took a rib from the man and made woman.

MAN WAS MADE FROM THE DUST OF THE GROUND IN THE WILDERNESS
Genesis 2:7-8 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.  (8)  And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

WOMAN WAS MADE FROM MAN IN THE GARDEN
Genesis 2:21-25  And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;  (22)  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.  (23)  And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.  (24)  Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.  (25)  And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

It is clear that Adam was made of the dust of the ground and then placed in the Garden of Eden.  He knew and named all of the beasts.  Then God created woman from man, she was made in the Garden of Eden.  The way God created them, separated the soft and feminine from the rough and masculine.  God always wanted two distinct sexes, not a unisex creation!

TREE OF LIFE AND FORBIDDEN TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL
Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:  (17)  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

A DEVIL IN PARADISE – THE SERPENT

NAMES OF OUR ADVERASRY: DAGON, SEPENT, DEVIL AND SATAN
Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

THE FALL – EATING OF THE FORBIDDEN TREE
Genesis 3:1-7 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?  (2)  And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:  (3)  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.  (4)  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:  (5)  For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.  (6)  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.  (7)  And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

MAN SENTENCED TO A LIFE OF HARD LABOR AND SWEAT TO END IN DEATH
Genesis 3:14-19  And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:  (15)  And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.  (16)  Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.  (17)  And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;  (18)  Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;  (19)  In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

FIRST ANIMAL SACRIFICED TO COVER ADAM AND EVE’S SIN
Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

ADAM AND EVE DRIVEN FROM THE GARDEN EDEN
Genesis 3:22-24 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:  (23)  Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.  (24)  So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

CAIN AND ABLE BORN – THE FIRST CHILDREN BORN TO ADAM AND EVE
Genesis 3:22-24 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:  (23)  Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.  (24)  So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

CAIN KILLS HIS BROTHER ABLE
Genesis 4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

GOD CONFRONT’S CAIN
Genesis 4:10 KJV And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Jewish tradition interprets the word for “blood” here as a plural form, “bloods;” meaning that the voice of all of the generations of people that would have come from Able; died with him that day.  Cain or any one who murders kills more than one person.  They kill an entire lineage.

CAIN MARKED AS THE FIRST MURDERER AND CURSED FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE
Genesis 4:11-16 KJV  And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;  (12)  When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.  (13)  And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.  (14)  Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.  (15)  And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.  (16)  And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

LAMB OF GOD SLAIN FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD
Revelation 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

God knew that man was going to sin.  Actually the odds were set against man.  Only through free choice could Holy, Righteous and Godly character be formed in man.  God could not create character; else we would be robots.  God would have to come to earth as a man as He did in Jesus Christ; to die and redeem man through His own blood.  It is through rebellion, which is sin; followed by repentance, turning away from sin and dying to sin; that God can forgive, reconcile and restore human beings back to paradise; back to a relationship with God.  In light of the promises of salvation, Paul encourages us to be perfecting holiness.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Paul further identifies the ministries of the church were placed by God for perfecting the saints of God, His people, the church.

Ephesians 4:11-13 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  (12)  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  (13)  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

SIN BY ONE MAN ADAM CAME DEATH --  BY ONE MAN CHIRST COMES THE RESURRECTION

1 Corinthians 15:21-23 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.  (22)  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.  (23)  But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

We are all tied to the Garden of Eden and that original sin.  In Adam we all die, but in Christ we are all made alive.  The foundation of God’s plan for our lives today is still the Garden of Eden.  One again, God is looking for a bride; someone to share all eternity with at His level; to commune forever with Jesus Christ and to have an eternal family.

Prayer:  Father in Heaven, open my mind to your complete truth.  Reveal your purpose for my life.  Forgive me for my sin and cleanse me by your blood.  Make me whole and restore me to wholeness in Christ.  Bring me into your oneness, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
